A practice nurse is a highly specialised nurse practitioner, highly skilled and trained in health promotion and chronic disease management. Mrs Sunderland is a qualified independent non-medical prescriber and prescribes treatment in her areas of expertise.

She helps patients maintain their health by advising on

  • stopping smoking
  • weight reduction
  • exercise
  • diet

She screens for early signs of disease and its prevention by

  • performing smears for preventing cervical cancer,
  • blood tests for detecting high cholesterol, diabetes, anaemia, underactive thyroid, kidney and liver disease.

She will also advise young people on sexual health.

She has a primary role in the diagnosis and investigation of asthma, chronic bronchitis/emphysema and diabetes and the ongoing treatment of these diseases with the assistance of the doctors.

She helps the doctors treat many chronic illnesses by monitoring the patient's condition in

  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • stroke
  • epilepsy
  • thyroid problems
  • kidney insufficiency
  • mental health problems
  • special drug therapies

 

She provides travel advice and administers vaccines, not only for travel but also childhood, influenza, shingles and pneumococcal vaccinations.
